Plastic bags with KKK fliers, candy canes found in Tinley Park

Police are investigating a “suspicious circumstance” in Tinley Park after a resident found a Ku Klux Klan flier this week outside her home in the southwest suburb.

About 12:30 p.m. Monday, the resident noticed a plactic bag in her driveway and, upon closer inspection, found it contained a candy cane and a flier from the Traditionalist American Knights, said Tinley Park Deputy Police Chief Steve Vaccaro. That flier was found in the 7000 block of 173rd Place; similar advertisements were found in at least four other nearby driveways.

“You can sleep tonight knowing the Klan is awake,” read the flier, according to Vaccaro.

Police placed the fliers and plastic bags into evidence, “in case something develops,” but no crime has been committed at this point, Vaccaro said.

“I’m not aware of a big KKK presence,” Vaccaro said, adding this is the first time he’s seen an incident like this after more than 20 years with Tinley Park police.

Back in October, residents of southwest suburban New Lenox Township found Ku Klux Klan fliers — advertising for new members — circulating in neighborhoods, police said previously. But no criminal activity was reported at the time.
