Missouri executed white supremacist serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin on Wednesday less than an hour after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected last-ditch efforts to postpone his death by lethal injection.
Franklin, 63, shot and paralyzed Hustler Magazine publisher Larry Flynt in 1978. He also shot civil rights activist Vernon Jordan in 1980.
He confessed to both crimes but was not convicted for them.
He was put to death in the state prison at Bonne Terre for the sniper attack on Gerald Gordon, 42, outside a suburban St. Louis synagogue in 1977.

Franklin’s lawyers had sought a stay of execution on three grounds: That he was mentally unfit to be executed, that the jury was not properly instructed when it gave him the death penalty, and that a new drug used for the first time to execute someone, pentobarbital, constituted cruel and unusual punishment.
The Supreme Court upheld a federal appeals court decision Tuesday overturning stays of execution granted by a lower court, paving the way for Franklin’s death.
Franklin was convicted of seven other murders across the country and claimed responsibility for up to 20 overall. He targeted blacks and Jews during his cross-country killing spree that lasted from 1977 to 1980.
He believed he was on a mission from God to spark a race war.
Flynt — one of his victims who survived — had said Franklin should not be executed.

“The government has no business at all being in the business of killing people,” the porn magnate told CNN.
Flynt was paralyzed from the waist-down by a sniper’s bullet in Georgia in 1978 during his trial on an obscenity charge. Franklin later confessed he shot Flynt because an issue of Hustler depicted interracial sex.
