Truro and Falmouth MP Sarah Newton has vowed to reduce immigration
Mrs Newton said she wanted to change the situation where people who raised concerns over immigration were “labelled as racists”.
Last month the Government launched a controversial initiative
whereby vans patrolled streets in London with messages telling illegal
immigrants to “go home or face arrest”.
In a column for the West Briton Mrs Newton said: “Between 1998 and
2010 over two million migrants settled in the UK. This large increase in
population over a short space of time had a profound effect; straining
public services and causing an over-supply of labour in some sectors of
the economy.
“Those who raised concerns about these very real problems were
all too often labelled as racists. This combination of difficulties
caused by immigration, and the stifling of debate on the issue, proved
toxic.”
The MP said the Conservative/ Liberal Democrat coalition
government was committed to reducing net immigration numbers to pre-1997
levels, the year the Labour Party gained power.
