Racist gesture: Sunderland fan is charged

A Sunderland football fan has been charged with a racially aggravated offence after an incident at the Sunderland vs West Brom match at the Stadium of Light last year

A football fan alleged to have made a racist gesture at a Premier League striker has been charged by police.
Liam Jones, 21, has been charged with a racially aggravated offence after officers received reports of offensive behaviour at the Sunderland vs West Brom match at the Stadium of Light last year.
Northumbria Police launched an investigation when a supporter was spotted on TV appearing to make a “monkey” taunt at West Bromwich Albion’s Romelu Lukaku.
Jones, 21, of East Vines, Sunderland, has been charged with a section five racially aggravated offence and will appear at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 22.
Chief Superintendent Kay Blyth, Sunderland area commander, said racist behaviour will not be accepted by the force.
She said: “We will not tolerate racist behaviour of any kind and will fully investigate any reports we receive.”
Belgian striker Lukaku appeared to be subjected to abuse after he scored a penalty in West Brom’s 4-2 victory over the Black Cats on November 24.
