Eight arrested after violence at EDL rally in Walsall

Police arrested eight people in a series of morning raids targeting English Defence League suspects across the West Midlands.

Officers swooped at addresses in Acocks Green, West Bromwich, Walsall, Tipton and Brownhills on Tuesday in a bid to track down the people responsible for sparking violent clashes during a Black Country rally last year.
Around 1,000 supporters of the EDL and a counter demonstration group had descended on Walsall town centre on Saturday, September 29.
Officers arrested 30 people when violence erupted.
Police raided homes in Severn Road, Acocks Green, Walker Street and Alexandra Road in Tipton, as well as Coles Lane in West Bromwich and Greswold Street in Hateley Heath.
Eight men, aged between 17 and 58, were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and were being questioned by cops last night.
Detective Inspector Pete Dunn, of West Midlands Police, said: “The majority of the people attending these demonstrations were law-abiding, however small numbers of people decided to get involved in a few ugly scenes when people began to try to break through police lines and were throwing missiles.
