Israeli official: US preparing to attack Syria

Israel’s Minister for Strategic Affairs, Moshe Ya’alon, says the U.S. is getting ready for a possible military attack on Syria.
He says Washington is prepared for military involvement in Syria allegedly to keep chemical weapons from “falling into irresponsible hands,” according to the Times of Israel.
Ya’alon’s remarks about a possible U.S. attack on Syria come less than a month after President Obama recognized the so-called National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as the representative of the Syrian nation and invited its head, Moaz al-Khatib, to the White House for talks.

Facts & Figures

Earlier this month, the USS Eisenhower, an aircraft carrier which boasts 8 fighter bomber squadrons and 8,000 sailors, airmen and Marines, sailed up to the Syrian coast, according to Israeli military intelligence website, DEBKAfile. The Eisenhower is joined by the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group which carries another 2,500 Marines.

U.S. President Barack Obama has recently recognized Syria’s opposition coalition as the representative of the Syrian government. Russia immediately condemned the move saying that Washington ran against agreements to seek political transition in Syria.
