Holocaust™ "Survivor" Irene Zisblatt Speaks To 8th Graders About "Escaping From A Gas Chamber"

Holocaust survivor Irene Weisberg Zisblatt delivered a testimony to Northside and Central middle schools on Tuesday, making a big impact on her audience. Overshadowed in stature by many of the eighth-graders to whom she spoke, Zisblatt carried the weight of history, her memories of the Holocaust, to the groups of students. Zisblatt described an idyllic childhood in Hungary abruptly aborted by the Nazis during the closing months of World War II. She told of the brutality of guards , the murder of her family when she was 10 years old and her miraculous escape from the gas chamber. Zisblatt finally spoke of her years of silence and her late-life epiphany that spurred her to begin writing and speaking, to reach as many people as possible that they may become a ‘witness to the ‘witnesses.’
