1361-Wenceslaus, Holy Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia was born in Nuremberg.
1794-Christiansborg Castle, the residence for Danish monarchs Copenhagen burned down.
1815-Napoleon Bonaparte escaped from Elba. He then began his second conquest of France.
1923-Italian Nationalists and Fascists merged (blue-shirts and black-shirts)
1924-The trial against Adolf Hitler for his part in the 1923 Munich Putsch began.
1935-The Luftwaffe was re-formed under Reichsmarshall Herman Goering.
1936-Hitler introduced Ferdinand Porsche's "Volkswagen"
1943-Aged 50, Theodor Eicke SS-Obergruppenf├╝hrer, commander of the SS-Division (mot) Totenkopf died during the Third Battle of Kharkov.
1946-2 killed and 10 wounded in race riot in Columbia, Tennessee.
1952-Churchill told the House of Commons that Britain now had an atomic bomb which it intended to test in Australia.
2001-The Taliban destroyed two giant Buddha statues in Bamyan, Afghanistan.
