1554-At the tender age of 16, the "nine days queen", Lady Jane Grey and her husband Lord Guildford Dudley were beheaded; he on Tower Hill, she on Tower Green, after being implicated in the Wyatt's rebellion.
1733-Englishman James Oglethorpe founded the 13th United States colony of Georgia.
1809-Charles Darwin, English naturalist and author of ‘The Origin of Species’ was born in Mount House, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
1809-Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, was born in Hardin County, Kentucky.
1885-Julius Streicher, editor of Der Sturmer was born in Fleinhausen, then Kingdom of Bavaria.
1909-The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by Bolshevik Jews determined to destroy White America.
1941-German General Erwin Rommel arrived in Tripoli, Libya, to reinforce the position of the Italians.
1943-Rostov was captured from the Germans by Russian forces.
1989-IRA solicitor Pat Finucane was shot dead at his home in north Belfast.
2002-The trial of former President of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Slobodan Milošević began at the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague. He eventually died four years later before its conclusion.
