On this day January 31st:
1606-Gunpowder Plot: Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were hung, drawn and quartered.for their plot against the vipers’ nest in Parliament.
1865-American Civil War: Robert E. Lee became General-in-Chief of the Confederate army.
1876-The United States ordered all red Indians to move into reservations.
1915-World War I: Germany used poison gas for the first time in the Battle of Bolimów against Russian troops.
1917-As World War One raged, Germany announced that submarine warfare would resume the next day, following a two-year break.
1941-The new recruits of the ‘Nordland’ Regiment gave their oath to SS Reichsführer Himmler in Oslo.
1943-Vichy France created the Milice (Militia), under the command of Joseph Darnand, an extreme right-wing World War 1 veteran, to combat the communist Resistance. It reached a strength of more than 20,000 by mid-1944.
1943-German Field Marshall Friedrich Paulus surrendered to the Soviets at Stalingrad, followed 2 days later by the remainder of his Sixth Army, ending one of World War II's fiercest battles.
1944-U-592 sunk off Ireland
1945-Two of Zhukov’s armies established a bridgehead on the Oder, to the North of Kustrin and less than 40 miles to Berlin.
